85 Cards-95 Braves Cut/Chop the Deck in Half

Game #1
ST. LOUIS -- John Tudor (5-1) won his league-leading 5th game, pitching 8 innings to defeat the 95 Braves 4-3. Ken Dayley (3) earned the save. Darrell Porter (1) led off a 3-run 3rd for the Cardinals with a solo shot off Greg Maddux (1-3). Jack Clark would add a 2-run single later. Chipper Jones (2) and Dave Justice (4) went back-to-back off Tudor in the 1st. Jones led all hitters with 3 hits.

Game #2
ST. LOUIS -- Tom Glavine (1-4) fired 7.1 IP of shutout ball for his first win of the year. Five other Braves pitchers followed, but all pitched goose eggs as Atlanta blanked the Cards 7-0. Mark Lemke was the only batter in the starting 9 without a base knock. Justice doubled home 2 runs in a 5-run 3rd inning explosion. Juaquin Andujar (2-3) started and lost for the Redbirds.

Game #3 (1st of DH)
ATLANTA -- Danny Cox (3-3) singled in a pair of runs in a 4-run 6th for St. Loo. He also hurled 7 IP in a 7-3 Cardinals winner. John Smoltz (1-3) 4 free passes in the 6th didn't help the Braves cause. Fred McGriff led all hitters with 3 safeties.


Game #4 (2nd of DH)
ATLANTA -- Mike Mordecai (1) doubled, homered and drove in 5 runs with his 3 knocks in a 6-5 Tomahawk win.  The normally light-hitting SS credited a diet of peaches and Coca-Cola. Uh-huh. His 3-run blast of Kurt Kepshire (0-4) in the 2nd gave the Bravos a lead they would not relinquish. The visitors drew within one run with a 4-run 8th. Brad Clontz (1) recorded the final out in the 9th to save the game for Steve Avery (1-3). Tommy Herr banged out 3 hits to raise his average to .330.

85 Jays Pluck 3 from 05 ChiSox

Game #1
CHICAGO -- Jesse Barfield (4) banged out 3 hits including an 8th inning home run as Toronto bested Chicago 5-3, despite being outhit 11-8. Dave Stieb (2-2) pitched 8.1 innings, scattering the 11 hits, which included solo HRs by Jermaine Dye  (2) and Paul Konerko (6). Tom Henke (2) nailed down the final two outs. Lloyd Moseby doubled in 2 in a 3-run 4th for the Blue Jays.

Game #2
CHICAGO -- Willie Upshaw (2) blasted a 3-run homer off Jon Garland (2-3) to highlight a 5-run 1st inning for the Jays and they romped to a 9-5 win. Al Oliver (2) and Ernie Whitt (6) added solo shots in later innings as Toronto jumped to a 9-1 lead. Doyle Alexander (3-2) went 7.1 IP, yielding just the 1 run. Damaso Garcia had 3 hits from the
lead-off spot.

Game #3 (1st of DH)
TORONTO -- Garth Iorg (2) swatted an 8th inning PH, 2-run homer to lift Toronto to a 3-2 victory in the the lid-lifter of a double dipper at Skydome. All runs in this one came via the long ball with Barfield (5) launching a solo shot in the 1st. Dye (3) and Konerko (7) went yard again for the Sox. Chicago native Jim Clancy (3-0) stayed perfect with 8 IP of 5-hit ball. Bill Caudill (2) saved it. Neal Cotts (0-1) took the loss in relief.

Game #4 (2nd of DH)
TORONTO -- Tadahito Iguchi drove in half of the White Sox runs in an 8-3 win with an IF out and a 3-run double. Jose Contreas (2-3) tossed 7.2 innings for the win on the mound. Bill Musselman (0-1) suffered the loss.
